Stress Looks Different on Her

Why the Strongest Women Are Often the Most Overlooked

It’s so common to look for the most obvious indicators that something is wrong.

But what exactly are you looking for, Sis…?

Signs of burnout. Breakdowns. Missed deadlines. Visible exhaustion.

But many resilient women don’t wear that costume.

I think people take the old adage, “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire,” a little too literally.

And while that may be true—most fires do produce smoke—someone has to be close

enough to recognize it, and aware enough to respond before it rages out of control.

Therein lies the problem.

Life is happening to all of us.

Context clues are not always easy to catch—if they exist at all.

We are all busy, and that will always be the case. That’s why you will hear me

emphasize, time and time again, the importance of intentionality. We have to find a way

to tap into it.

I equate it to a muscle—if we don’t use it, atrophy sets in.

Instead, we default to labeling.

“Oh, she’s got it.”

“That girl is so strong.”

But what if you’re wrong?

Have you ever paused to consider that…?

Yes… our sisters are still delivering. Still holding it all together.

But what’s the alternative?

I’ll tell you. It’s falling apart—you just don’t see it until it’s far too late.

We have real responsibilities. People who depend on us—our children, our families, our

careers. We can’t just drop everything and fall apart. So, we hold it… until we can’t.

And the truth is, many of us who are labeled “strong” are not experienced—or

comfortable—with asking for help or being vulnerable.

And that’s exactly why no one notices how much stress we are under.

As we move closer to the end of #StressAwarenessMonth, I’ll leave you with this to

consider: We tend to look for stress in obvious places. We look for signs that disrupt. The

moments that demand attention.

But what happens when stress doesn’t look like that?

What happens when it looks like productivity…

like reliability…

like being the one everyone depends on?

That’s the kind of stress we don’t talk about.

The kind carried by women who are managing everything—professionally, personally,

emotionally—while quietly feeling the weight of everything they’re carrying. Women who

have mastered the ability to function under pressure, perform under strain, and keep

going—even when their capacity has long been exceeded.

We don’t question them.

We admire them.

And while that label is often given with respect, what we fail to recognize is the

expectation that comes with it. Strength becomes synonymous with endurance. With

self-sufficiency. With the unspoken agreement that she will continue to carry—without

needing support, without asking for help, without breaking.

Over time, that expectation does something subtle, but significant.

It conditions her to normalize stress.

To minimize her own needs.

To push through what should have been addressed.

And because she continues to perform, no one interrupts the pattern.

No one pauses long enough to ask what it’s costing her.

This can’t just be about recognizing stress when it becomes visible. It has to be about

acknowledging the forms of stress that are hidden in plain sight—especially in the

women we describe as “strong.”

Because just because she’s handling it…

doesn’t mean it’s not hurting her.

And just because she hasn’t said anything…

doesn’t mean she’s okay.

That’s the part we need to start paying attention to.

Because the same strength we admire…

may be the very thing that’s keeping her silent.

And that’s where the real risk lives.

Burnout is not a Badge of Honor, Sis!!!

And if this woman is you, you have a responsibility—to speak up, to set healthy boundaries, and to begin rewriting this narrative.

Today is as good a day as any to start.

Let’s do it together, Sis.

Thank you for your feedback. We are resilient! There's no question about that, but we have to get better at setting boundaries and respecting our own limitations. There are people that depend on us, but we can't serve from an empty cup.

More importantly create more safe spaces for women from all walks of life to know- Sis! You are not alone.

Thank you sis for this article. It is a reminder even though we may be the stronger person that we cannot be everything to everyone else. We have to consider and save ourselves.

Thank you so much for your feedback.. Sis, these are lived experiences. These are experiences still being lived out in real time. I want to continue to bring visibility to the fact that- at the end of the day, we are the captains of our ship!

However, we are not perfect! This means that we must continue to do the work and course correct for our own sake. It starts by creating boundaries for ourselves and others. We also need to have those we trust to hold us accountable as well.

Thanks Sis for your feedback. I couldn't agree more. We need to continuously check-in with ourselves and the people we love! Talking, sharing and loving on one another other keeps the focus EXACTLY where it needs to be!!

“Just because she’s handling It doesn’t mean it’s not hurting her”….This hit home because I myself can move like a robot…in the sense of not taking a mental break, not pouring into self, etc. just non-stop moving…not addressing what actually needs to be addressed..packing down my true feelings & emotions because I don’t have time for that. Plus if I don’t do ABC then who will?!! But reading this article is a reminder…literally BURNOUT IS NOT A BADGE OF HONOR SIS. Those 2 dishes can sit in the sink until tomorrow, laundry can wait another day, you can call ya girls back tomorrow…it’s okay to take a load off to relax your mind & body. Reset & recharge…Show up for…

You are really connecting with the essence of what this article and messaging was designed to foster! Self-assessment and acknowledgement of self. You are so right about us NOT being robots, but sometimes the way we can go on auto pilot mimics the behavior of one- doesn't it?

Taking the necessary pauses, stopping before we reach our breaking point... ALL valid points. If I am being honest, I have had dishes in the sink for way longer than tomorrow or the next day.. just being real.. and too cheap to run the dishwasher.. LOL!

So glad this is a judgement free zone... I know you are too..🤭
